Dr. Yap gave her insights on how pertinent government policies can help industries develop green production strategies that focus on minimizing the amount of waste produced by their manufacturing processes, rather than treating it at the end of the pipe later on. Her talk also cited a few examples of industrial ecosystems that promoted a symbiotic relationship between various companies (and sectors even) that resulted not only in environmental, but economic profit as well. In her interaction with the audience, she implored the youth to take an active role in the protection of the environment by being mindful of how their daily routines could impact it.

Dr. Yap, a distinguished alumna of the Department of Chemistry and one of this year’s recipients of the Semper Fidelis Awards for the Scientia category, is a well-travelled expert on industrial ecology, environmental impact assessment, and disaster planning and management. She is currently a professor at the University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada.
