USC Chem Pilot Tests Online Homework Systems

From Online Homework Systems

The Department of Chemistry adopted web-based learning resources Online Web Learning (OWL) from Cengage Learning and Mastering Chemistry from Pearson Education for use in its service and professional courses starting this first semester. Faculty and staff underwent a training seminar and workshop on the use of the service last June 6 and 25.

OWL and Mastering Chemistry are pedagogical tactics in enhancing student learning that focus on maximizing student work outside of the classroom using software tools that hinge on the propensity of students to make use of the internet. Teachers can assign homework, which their respective classes can then access and answer online. Both systems are able to give immediate feedback as the students submit their work; not only can the instructor access information on the progress of each student, but also statistical data that can reveal what specific topics the class found difficult.

Mastering Chemistry is currently utilized by Chem 1 and Chem 2N students, whereas OWL is used by those enrolled in Chem 2A, Chem 4 and Chem 22. This initiative was undertaken to improve the delivery of instruction by focusing on student-centered learning and optimizing student-teacher contact inside the classroom.
